Sustainable Development Goals

In 2000 all 191 United Nations members states committed to strive to attain 8 Millennium Development Goals by 2015. Based on the relative successes in movements towards these goals, effective January 2016 all 193 members states adopted the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Tajikistan with a per capita income of $925.90 had a ranking of 129 out of 188 countries and a Human Development Index of 0.627 for the year 2015 according to the UNDP Human Development Report 2016. Numerous local, national and international factors contribute to this situation. Health care is of key importance to the development of all societies. Meteoric rises in diabetes, for example, are projected among Central Asians due to factors such as extreme poverty, inadequate health services, malnutrition and high amounts of carbohydrate in the diet and correlated to this are rises in diabetic retinopathy and related ailments. Such incidences of preventable blindness have the potential of having an inordinate negative impact on Central Asian societies.

Importance of Eye Care in attaining Sustainable Development Goals

Over the next 15 years, the burden on families dealing with blindness is projected to increase significantly in Central Asia. It is estimated that over a quarter of a million people in Tajikistan are already visually impaired due to preventable or correctable visual disorders. The correction of refractive errors in vision and prevention of loss of eye sight has the potential of enabling the individual to maintain not only their own well-being but also to contribute to the lives of those around them. Good eye sight of a population can positively and directly impact the attainment of all 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

Please partner with us to help support and develop comprehensive eye care for the people of Tajikistan.
